A new underground airport train system is now up and running at Washington Dulles International (IAD).
The AeroTrain opened last week and transports passengers from the Main Terminal to the midfield concourses. The nearly 4-mile system includes four underground train stations, a vehicle-maintenance facility and a passenger security screening facility built on a new mezzanine level in the Main Terminal. Travel time between stations is less than two minutes.
“Washington Dulles International Airport represented the best of architecture and aviation facility planning when it opened in 1962 as the first U.S. airport built for jet aircraft,” says James E. Bennett, president and CEO of MWAA. “With the opening of AeroTrain, Dulles continues its evolution to meet the needs of the flying public.”
The new system is the centerpiece of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority’s capital development program known as D2, Dulles Development. More than $3B has been invested in improvements since 2001, including a new airport traffic control tower, new runway, Concourse B extension, two new parking garages, a moving walkway to Concourse B and the expansion of the Main Terminal. Work is continuing on the expansion of the International Arrivals Building adjacent to the Main Terminal.
